What is Special Education?

According to Heward (2003), special education is defined as individually planned, systematically implemented, and carefully evaluated instruction to help exceptional children achieve the greatest possible self-sufficiency and success in present and future environments.​

Have you ever been labeled “dumb”, “lazy” and “careless” despite of putting much effort to do your tasks at school? Are you often bullied or scolded by your teachers and parents for getting bad grades? Do you often feel lonely, misunderstood and mad that nobody seems to appreciate whatever you do? Perhaps you’re among those people with exceptionalities.

 

 

If you search the word exceptionality in the dictionary, you’ll find that exceptionality is an adjective that describes something as ‘unusual.’ While most of us will have a first impression that an exceptionality would certainly mean that you’ll have a difficult time ‘blending in’ with the crowd or belonging to a group or having friends, then perhaps you should learn more about these people whose “rare talents” help change the world and have shared their lives to inspire people.
